Mixed Use

Abbey Wall Works, Merton, London
Project
Redevelopment of existing employment site to provide a major mixed use residential led scheme including 66 homes and new retail floorspace.
What we did
Full management of the planning application process from start to finish. This included pre-application consultation with the Local Planning Authority and other key stakeholders, including Historic England. The site is in a sensitive and important historical location, being part of the Merton Priory conservation area and adjacent to Abbey Mills, former home of the Liberty Print Works. This presented an excellent opportunity to create a scheme of high-quality design which reflected this unique historical context. A full pre-application public consultation process was organised, including a public exhibition to gather views of local residents, businesses and stakeholders to inform the scheme design. Whilst the application was refused at Committee against officer’s recommendation, the subsequent appeal process resulted in the refusal being overturned and planning permission being granted by the Planning Inspectorate.
What we achieved
Through pro-active management of the application and appeal process and co-ordination of the consultant team, a positive outcome for the client was delivered, securing planning permission to enable the redevelopment of the site to provide 66 new homes and associated commercial floorspace, which will provide new jobs and amenities for the local community.
indigoScott
“We appointed Neil as our planning consultant to secure the most beneficial permission for the development of our site, as he had delivered for us on previous projects. His expert knowledge of the planning system, ability to build relationships with Officers and key stakeholders, efficient management of the consultant team, and persistence in terms of navigating through the challenges that arose, which included successfully advising on the appeal process, was critical to ensuring a positive planning outcome for our business.”
